Mazal Tov to JCDSRI parent, Stephen's Chambers whose children's book, Jane and the Raven King was recently published!

"Jane is attacked by a man with raven black wings and escapes with her brother to a magical land at the center of the world called Hotland. Thank you to everybody, and most especially our wonderful volunteers, who supported our Scholastic Book Fair/Reading Week Celebration! Because of your efforts, we sold approximately $2,600.00 worth of merchandise! Your children will soon be enjoying many new library books. Over 30 people helped with the Book Fair. Thank you to the crew that set-up and broke-down the Fair, especially the Alicia. Special thanks to Susan Sugerman, and Bob White for running the cashier table on Clifford Family Night , to our 4th and 5th grade fifth grade volunteers at Clifford Family Night and to the families who purchased books for the Class Wish Program. And, of course, a very special thank you to Clifford! Over 40 families participated in Clifford Family Night! Congratulations to Eli and Annebelle both '15, the winners of the annual Gobstoppers Contest. See you next year! Karolyn White. Librarian

TECHNIQUE
Camera Obscura-thought to be used by Vermeer
Camera = Latin for “room” Obscura = Latin for “dark”
Go into a very dark room on a bright day. Make a small hole in a window cover and look at the opposite wall. What do you see? Magic! There in full color and movement will be the world outside the window — upside down! This magic is explained by a simple law of the physical world. Light travels in a straight line and when some of the rays reflected from a bright subject pass through a small hole in thin material they do not scatter but cross and reform as an upside down image on a flat surface held parallel to the hole. This law of optics was known in ancient times.

Monster Fun!
After celebrating Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, Grade 1 continued to read monster books. See list in Booklists for Kids section. We decided to open a monster restaurant called The Best Monster Restaurant Ever (suggested by Micah). The first graders created a monster menu (rather disgusting!) and we partied on monster food (rather yucky, but tasty). Fun was had by all! Great job Grade 1!

This book is fun! North American Ashkenazi Jews often feel that the way they (we) celebrate holidays, tell stories, and sing songs is the only way/the best way/the real way to do them. But it's not, and after reading this book I think everyone will be ready to cook something new, play a different game, sing a different song. After a quick history lesson, we are told a couple of things that I didn't know--"Store your candles in the freezer to make them for longer". And for lighting the Hanukkah candles, in Sephardi households, "only the head of the household lights the hanukkiah". The "Hanukkah-Israel connection" is made much more clear--"once again, a small number of Jews relied on strategy not one, but many mighty armies surrounding them." Then we take a virtual trip around the world. In Israel, the city of Modi'in holds an annual relay race from Modi'in to Jerusalem in which a torch is passed from one runner to the next. In New York City, a family does "something different every day" of Hanukkah--a night to bake cookies, a music night, a movie night, a night to give to charity, a night to invite friends for a sleepover, and a night to exchange gifts. In Istanbul, we get a new song ("Ocho Candelas") and a new recipe for "burmelos"--fried fritters. In Samarkand,Uzbekistan, "it is customary for sodas to bring their families to their parents' homes to celebrate the first night of the holiday." We get a little vocabulary lesson (Bivi, grandmother, and Bobo, grandfather) and a recipe for jarkoff, traditionally served on the holiday. From Turin, Italy, there is a link between Tisha b'Av and Hanukkah--the first being sad, the destruction of the Temple, and the second being the joyful rededication. The recipe is for Precipizi a honey-covered sweet. In Australia Hanukkah comes in the summer, so the recipe is for a New York Blizzard, a vanilla ice cream/milk combination. In Warsaw Poland, we get potato latkes; in Nabeul, Tunisia, we don't get a recipe, but we do learn about the Festival of the Daughters.
